You might be surprised to find out that grandparents and retirees are the ones most likely to file for divorce today.

The common chatter around marriage and divorce rates has been that it has a 50% chance of surviving. However, that’s not the case. To understand who’s getting divorced and why we can’t group everyone together. When we break it down by generation we see big differences in the divorce rate.

When it comes to divorce there is a major shift taking place. Most people getting married today are of the Millennial generation. On average, Millennials have about a 26% chance of getting divorced. The parents of the Millennial couple are more likely to be divorced or to become divorced with a divorce rate of 18% higher.

Overall, the divorce rate in the US has actually declined thanks to the younger generations: Millenials and Gen X-ers. Being pickier about who they marry, and waiting to tie the knot at an older age, as well as less rigid roles are possible reasons why newer marriages are more successful.
